Felipe Manterola, a photographer from the beginning of the 20th century

There are numerous works of ethnographic nature that feature photographs of Arratia and especially of Zeanuri, often without mentioning the author. In most cases the photographer is Felipe Manterola.

Felipe Manterola Urigoitia (1885-1977) was born and resident of Zeanuri. In 1897 his mother was widowed and Felipe, being the eldest of three brothers, took over the family business known in his municipality as The tobacconist shop — shoe store, shop, café and meeting place. But, in addition, he was a great photographer and was frequently called upon to take portraits and reports, even if he never worked as a professional. (more…)

I welcome the invitation extended to me by Segundo Oar-Arteta to present Basque photographer Eulalia Abaitua (Bilbao, 1853–1943) to the readers of this blog.

You may or may not know her. Be that as it may, these words will hopefully help further disseminate the contribution she made through her photographs, taken between the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. (more…)
